Nightime Outside.

Patty groaned, then turned to her baby. ‘Shush David, let daddy sleep.’ She turned on her side and gave him what he woke her for. He began that distinct sound of a satisfied baby nursing.
Blue rolled over and spooned with her. ‘I’m awake Patty.’ He stroked his baby’s face. ‘He’s quite an aggressive boy is he not.?’ She looked down at him and ran her fingers up his profile. He was very tiny but had the beginnings of his daddy’s nose.
'Blue, do you think she is ok tonight? She left her bag here. Did you see what was in it? She has so little, it made me so sad to see that. If she were older and going on her own, we would be there to help her and make it wonderful. Why do it this way?’ Patty felt like crying as she spoke.
He held her tightly and kissed her face and ears, stroked her hair. ‘Angel, she is a Bluesage. She is a woman. She is our Becky on the verge of the whole wide world. She will be back in our arms in days. We will not leave without her. Now, is he ready for his daddy to help get him back to sleep?'
She picked up his son and handed him to daddy. Blue propped up on some pillows and patted David. He squirmed and fussed, but with the calm effect of daddy, he was settling. 'I can’t know what is wrong with him for certain, but I suspect he is missing his sister.’
She looked at Blue, he looked so serious. ‘Oh come on, he’s only eight days old Blue.’ She laughed quietly.
He held him up and examined him carefully. ‘Seems I see here that he has the Bluesage bloodline. They are known for abilities that start early.’
He handed her back to mama and lay back down. She changed him and put a clean nightshirt on him. She swaddled her son to see if that would keep him settled. She lay next to her husband. They lay in each others arms, so tired it was quickly a private dreamlike state.

Until half an hour later the young king rose to the top of the scale of notes from a baby song of unhappy times. Bluesage quickly sat up, 'Patty, let's take him outside. I will get the baby and the cradle, you get the blankets and other necessary things. ' He stood and picked up the cradle, placed it outside. He came inside to see a mad red faced baby and a mama with deep sleep still on her face.
He picked up his son, put his lips to his sons, and soon had him shushed and quiet. He lay him gently down on his stomach. He peered in and saw her hands full. He laughed slightly and helped her bring the pillow and baby bag, and the ice chest. She had cool drinks in there when she had to sit up late with him.
Blue sat and begin to quietly settle his homesite. Mom came near the bed and the young Bluesage sensed his mama. A loud squeal and then the winding up of the sirens. Mama picked up a starving boy and gave him what he thought he needed. Somehow she felt that she was too tired.

Patty dragged her pillow over to sit by him. She sat and nursed him, rocking him quietly. Blue turned and watched her. 'My love, do you feel okay?' She looked up at him. Her eyes did not shine. He could see her face was somewhat swollen. A quick survey of her body showed him what he suspected.
'Mama, you know that son of yours loves you greatly. Yet if you do not take better care of yourself, he will likely not be happy with your choices. Can you pump some of your milk into small containers? I could then get up with him a few times, letting mama sleep.' His idea seemed to find a spark in her. She brightly looked at him and smiled bright.
