Bob was on Betty’s nerves...

Betty was most certainly on Bob's nerves...

Betty nagged Bob every few hours about the fence. David was only away from his mother for a few weeks, but Betty could not rest until the fence was up. She had ordered supplies the day her plan was formed to take the baby. At the time she could not decide if she wanted a fence or a closed in patio. Bob was barely awake when he heard his wife begin to speak.

‘Bob when are you going to get that fence put up? I have bought the supplies and have waited and waited. Do you see the grass growing around the lumber now? You have to mow and use caution not to damage any of the wood planks. For once let’s have something on our property be nice. I need that fence up sooner than later, Bob. Our little boy needs to go outside and I do not want any prying eyes on him. Now Bob how can I do that without some privacy? I want a life behind the world of curiosity seekers, police, or even judges.’

Bob had sat up and began to appear to listen intently. He looked over at her and asked ‘Uh, Betty, do you know where the lawn mower is dear?’ She threw her hands up in the air and stormed out of the room. She started breakfast for them, when he finally came out of the room.

Bob just ignored her while they ate breakfast. As David began to wail he looked over at him and wondered if Betty was listening.

As they ate Betty talked non-stop about the need for privacy. She had to go out later and she needed to know that the fence would be finished. Bob kept looking over at his nephew and thinking he would like to take him to the fishing hole and enjoy the afternoon before she got back. He wasn’t listening when she told him how he was going to bathe the baby for her while she took a shower. Tommy did and smiled. He knew his uncle didn’t listen to Aunt Betty when she rattled on and on.

Betty took a long shower and thought of how wonderful it would be to have a real son to take on trips and show off. The idea of having someone else, besides Bob to talk to, made her head spin which then made her dizzy enough to hold the side of the shower to steady herself. Then the water turned freezing cold. She shrieked and Tommy came running in to tell her that Uncle Bob was washing the baby in the dish soap the dishes were soaking in.

‘Oh for Sims sake. What is wrong with that man, Tommy tell him to leave the hot water alone. I am in the shower.’ Her voice was shrill and hurt his young ears. He backed out of the bathroom while she continued to shriek.

Bob finally gave the baby to Tommy to take into the bedroom and give him to Betty. He had to get out of the house and find that lawn mower. The grass had grown up fast and he knew he wanted to see what the lawn boy could do with those weeds. A challenge was forming in his mind of what he would do and how he would win. Betty spent some time talking to Tommy about not telling his mother about Homer. She wanted him to go to school and not tell anyone that he had a baby in the house. This confused the little boy, but he could see by her face, he should not argue with her

Later Betty went to see how the fence was coming along. She couldn’t hear the hammering and she began to think he was goofing off again. When she saw Bob, he was in deep thought over his lawn mower. She was appalled and began to screech at him as she saw how little he had accomplished. Bob looked up and said to her, ‘Betty, do you have a crescent wrench?’

She walked off spitting words out of her mouth as she stormed into the house. ‘Stupid man, when am I ever going to get something that I want done? I have asked him for days to get it mowed and now he has barely started. The baby can’t stay in the house all the time. I need that fence done.I am going to have to go downtown and find someone to come over.'

Betty began to think of some way to get what she wanted and make sure Bob kept up with the baby while she worked on this new idea. She sat at the kitchen table reading the newspaper.
